Mike Sharples (born December 14, 1952 in Sale) is Professor of Educational Technology at The Open University in the United Kingdom. ==Background== His father was a research leader in polymer chemistry and his mother worked as a teacher of mathematics and science. Dr. Sharples explained that he was inspired to get into the field of educational technology after reading an article in the ''Daily Express'' science annual 2 September 1963 that described automated teaching systems. Sharples graduated from the St. Andrews University in 1976 with a Bsc. Hons in Computational Science, then he moved to the Dept of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh as a post graduate student. His PhD thesis focused on the topic of Cognition, Computers and Creative Writing.
